My background and philosophy

It's been over 20 years of music for me and I still wake up every day excited for what's next, whether practicing piano or composing a new piece. I suppose that excitement is the point of studying music; that's what I want to share with my students and teach them how to experience.

I started playing piano seriously around my early teens and have been going non-stop ever since. When in school, I studied piano performance and improvisation; a few years and degrees later, I found myself performing in jazz clubs throughout Los Angeles and touring the east coast and Europe. These days, aside from teaching, I spend most of my time exploring classical piano repertoire and composing music for use in film, TV, and video games. In fact, my younger students are usually quite excited to hear about the latest games I've scored and shortly disappointed when they have nothing to do with Fortnite. Anyway, that's enough about my musical journey, let's get started with yours!

MINIATURES

Volume I

Miniatures is a collection of 80 piano pieces that I composed for novice pianists. Although primarily pedagogical, my goal is that each piece features a whimsical character or mood, encapsulated by it's title, that students can connect with and enjoy. I use these pieces almost exclusively with my beginner students and have found my students excited to learn the next one each time. It is my hope that other teachers' students can enjoy these pieces too. The book is arranged more or less in order of difficulty, but it has several indexes to help find a piece suitable for what a student might need to focus on. You can purchase a digital (PDF) version of Miniatures below. Please subscribe below for updates!
